The French Association of Shipowners in the Fishing sector (UAPF) commissioned F&S for an evaluation of the annual quantities of greenhouse gas (GHG) emitted by the French fishing fleet since 1990. The study funded by France Filière Pêche supported the definition and the implementation of an innovative methodology based on intensity of activities deployed by the different fleet segments.
Results obtained indicate a 50% decrease of quantities of CO2 emitted between 1990 and 2017, beyond the 40% objective defined under the Kyoto Protocol for 2030. This achievement can be explained by efforts to reduce the fleet compounded by a 30% decrease of the carbon footprint of vessels (i.e. quantities of CO2 emitted by kg fish caught), in a context of improvement of the status of exploited stocks.
